Dr. Marilyn Hamilton serves as the Acting Dean of Academic Affairs at the University of the District of Columbia – Community College (UDC-CC). Her professional career in postsecondary education spans over 30 years. Dr. Hamilton’s major responsibilities include oversight of academic planning and programs, academic services and academic policy. She also oversees faculty appointments and evaluation, governance, and budget. Undertaking her administrative role in academic affairs at the College in August 2012. Dr. Hamilton provided consistent, sustained, and strong leadership support throughout the early growth and development of UDC-CC, overseeing the implementation of innovative and leading edge program initiatives, such as those advocated by Achieving the Dream, Complete College America, that respond to its mission and serve the academic needs of the diverse student population.

Dr. Hamilton is currently involved in curricular redesign and implementation of high impact practices, such as the implementation of co-requisite remediation courses in English and mathematics, redesign of the first year seminar course, and the curricula redesign of the General Education program. Past activities include the implementation of an ACCUPLACER preparation course and the development of a comprehensive assessment system for the College. All of these activities are designed to increase student success, persistence, retention and completion rates. Dr. Hamilton has represented UDC-CC and has led contingencies from UDC and UDC-CC to national events and initiatives sponsored by Complete College America and Achieving the Dream. The college is a member of both organizations.

Prior to her administrative appointments, Dr. Hamilton served as an instructor for several years in UDC’s Early Childhood Education Associate of Arts degree program. She oversees the management and coordination of the college’s Early Childhood Leadership Institute (ECLI). The ECLI works with community-based and Head Start programs in the District of Columbia to help child care employees receive their Associate of Arts (AA) and Bachelor’s degrees (BA) in Early Childhood Education. To date, over 1,500 child care workers have obtained their AA and BA degrees. The program has maintained an 89% graduation rate. Dr. Hamilton is a successful grant writer who has successfully obtained local and federal grants to expand access to education in early childhood education.

Dr. Hamilton received her Master’s degree in Education and Administration from Howard University, and her Ph.D. in Education and Technology from Walden University.
